Elk are vocal animals and they make many different sounds throughout the season.  One of the most recognized of these sounds is the "bugle" of a bull elk during the rut.  Below are some examples:

Another familiar sound is that of the cow elk.  Cows and calves make a "chirp" that can be heard throughout the year, but most predominantly during the rut.  Click to listen:
